Understanding homelessness
Homelessness
If you don’t have somewhere safe to stay, or you’re worried about losing your home, support is available. You can ask for help before your situation becomes a crisis.
Understanding homelessness
Homelessness can take different forms. It can include:
- Sleeping rough, in a car or in a tent.
- Staying temporarily with friends or family because you have nowhere else to live.
- Living in emergency or temporary accommodation because other options aren’t available.
- Living in severely overcrowded housing without suitable alternatives.
Having a roof over your head doesn’t always mean having a secure home.

Are you worried about losing your home?
If you’re struggling to maintain your housing, you can contact Housing Connect for advice. They can assess your needs, explain your housing options and help you explore assistance you may be eligible for, including support with bond or rent arrears.
For general housing assistance, call 1800 800 588, Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm.
